Online Advertisers are Taking Control October 19, 2007

Filed under: Media Commentary — NYU WIC @ 7:57 pm

Are you one of those people who clicks the “SKIP THIS AD” button when a huge interactive commercial eats up your screen as you’re trying to access a page or read the online news? Well, I’m one of those delightful consumers who loves ads but not necessarily online popups…and I love, love, love to click that “skip” button.

Something is happening…or at least about to happen. There’s something very suspicious going on with Advertising Age and I can’t wait to find out. When trying to access the AdAge site, this is what flashed up on my screen:

I of course clicked “SKIP” but it disappeared and came back up, and ultimately, I can’t access the site. And then I realized: this is a message FROM Advertising Age! And this is one ad they are NOT letting me skip, NOT letting me ignore. Genius. What is going on? They’ve taken control back from me today–but WHAT is going to happen on October 30?? Stay tuned to find out.
